Information technology is an essential element technology not only for social infrastructure such as internet information communication networks and smart grids, but for all “systems” in general, such as sensing of the environment that surrounds information processing equipment, “fintech” (financial information engineering), and automatic driving systems. As a result, there is a need for comprehensive information-related capabilities that can appropriately obtain, collect, and store various and large amounts of information, as well as appropriately process that data. Building a system that fully utilizes IT and contributes to society requires the acquisition of universal information science and technologies that in all applications, and it will also be important to be able to apply the acquired knowledge of information science to advanced research and development. Furthermore, there will be a need for advanced ethical perspectives as experts who handle cutting-edge information. The Department of Applied and Cognitive Informatics is responding to such social demands to develop human resources with advanced expertise and ethics who can contribute to the creation and development of various industries that support an advanced information society.
